Pompeii

I’ll keep this one short and sweet. Pompeii is cool. Is it worth the 7 hours we spent wandering around the city? Debatable. This was Kim’s second trip to Italy and they missed out on Pompeii by like an hour, so she was determined to get there this time and we had plenty of time to kill between Rome and Capri. A short train ride to and from Naples is all it takes to get down there, and the ruins are 5 minute walk from the train stop, so accessibility was not an issue. Make sure you bring plenty of water and wear some comfortable shoes, as the paths are all stone.

Obviously one of the coolest parts of visiting Pompeii is seeing the casts of the human bodies that were buried by the volcanic eruption in AD 79. The cavities were filled with plaster during the excavation process. Unfortunately a lot of places were under construction, meaning we couldn’t see the casts of people having sex, which is an odd tourist attraction in my opinion. The city was impressively preserved under ash and pumice, giving us an incredible look into what life may have been like during the Pax Romana.

Anyway, it’s worth a quick trip, but I wouldn’t spend a whole day there. Learn some things, see some history, get a lot of exercise.
